What is Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture?
Mei Zen is a form of acupuncture that focuses on revitalizing your face and skin without the need for surgery or caustic chemicals. It is a non-invasive treatment that reduces fine lines and age spots, smooths complexions, and tightens aging skin. Not only will Mei Zen give you a more radiant outward appearance, but it also balances your overall Qi – thereby improving your general wellbeing. From a Chinese medicine standpoint, what you see on your face, at least in part, is a reflection of your overall health.
How does Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture work?
Mei Zen targets the face and neck. Thin acupuncture needles are inserted into your skin to stimulate the production and distribution of fibroblasts (which are cells that can form collagen and elastin) to the needle sites. Both collagen and elastin are key to a smooth and glowing complexion. As we age, levels of both will decrease in our skin, causing the appearance of fine lines and age spots, as well as sagging skin.
While Mei Zen targets the face and neck, the stimulation of fibroblast production balances the distribution of collagen throughout your body. This is why many who undergo Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture will notice overall improvements to skin tone, lifting, and more elasticity or suppleness to their skin. The effects of Mei Zen are cumulative, so a complete protocol and maintenance will greatly increase your collagen and elastin levels.
The protocol starts with a 20-minute free consultation to see if you’re eligible for Mei Zen (most people are). An ideal course of treatment is twice per week for five weeks and then seasonal maintenance, but we can build a custom plan based on your goals and availability.
What are the health benefits of Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture?
As we’ve mentioned, Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture is a non-invasive alternative to plastic surgery, chemical peels, and laser treatments. People of all ages can benefit from Mei Zen, and generally see improvement in some or all of the following areas
Improved complexion (face, neck, and decolletage)
- Improvements in acne, rosacea, and broken capillaries
- More even skin tone
- Fading of age spots
- Softer and more vibrant skin
Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
- Improved elasticity through the collagen and elastin matrix
- Reduction in fine lines (they may even disappear)
- A “levelling” of deeper lines (deeper lines may never go away completely but they can “fill up” and look much softer and less harsh)
A tighter jaw line, early-stage jowls can be minimized
Reduction in puffiness
What else can Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture, like all branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a holistic treatment. What that means is that while treatments like Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture target a specific area of your body, they will still provide treatment and relief of other conditions. This is because all of the systems and functions of your body are interconnected. Improved wellness in one area will impact the rest of your body as well. So, in addition to improving the health and youthfulness of your complexion, Mei Zen also helps treat the following conditions:
Bell’s palsy
Bell’s palsy is a neurological condition that causes the muscles of one side of the face to weaken. People with Bell’s palsy will have a lopsided smile and the eye on the affected side will resist closing. While the exact cause of Bell’s palsy is unknown, it is a temporary condition that typically doesn’t last more than six months.
Post-stroke sequelae
Post-stroke sequelae is the term for the medical, musculoskeletal, and psychological symptoms experienced in the aftermath of a stroke. Having a stroke can be debilitating as it causes symptoms like partial paralysis, cognitive impairment, pain syndromes, and post-stroke depression, to name a few.
Facial pain
Facial pain is pain that originates from any point on the face. It is usually categorized into four types: dental, nerve, temporomandibular, or vascular pain. There are a variety of causes from headaches to dental issues, or conditions like trigeminal neuralgia.
TMJ pain
The temporomandibular joint, which is what TMJ stands for, is the sliding hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. TMJ pain is caused by things like chronically clenching or grinding your teeth, misalignment of the joint, arthritis, or damage from a blow or hard impact to the joint.
